Frequently Asked Questions

UPSC CAPF (Central Armed Police Forces) Assistant Commandant exam is conducted annually to recruit officers for BSF, CRPF, CISF, ITBP, and SSB at the rank of Assistant Commandant (Group A, Gazetted). It is one of the most sought-after exams for a career in paramilitary forces.

CAPF has two written papers: Paper 1 (General Ability & Intelligence, 250 marks, 2 hours — objective type) and Paper 2 (General Studies, Essay & Comprehension, 200 marks, 3 hours — descriptive). This is followed by a Physical/Medical Test and Interview/Personality Test (150 marks). Total marks: 600.

Candidates must hold a Bachelor's degree from a recognized university. The age limit is 20-25 years for general category, with relaxation of 3 years for OBC and 5 years for SC/ST. Both male and female candidates can apply. Physical fitness standards must be met during the physical test.

CAPF Assistant Commandants are in Pay Level 8 (Rs. 47,600-1,51,100) with gross salary approximately Rs. 80,000-90,000 per month including allowances. Additional perks include free accommodation, medical facilities, canteen, and subsidized education for children. The post offers faster promotions compared to many other government services.

CAPF recruits for paramilitary/central police forces (BSF, CRPF, CISF), while NDA and CDS recruit for the Armed Forces (Army, Navy, Air Force). CAPF requires graduation (NDA needs Class 12), has a different exam pattern, and offers a career in internal security rather than military defence. CAPF is open to both genders.

Selection involves: Written Exam (Paper 1 + Paper 2, 450 marks), Physical Standards/Fitness Test (height, chest, running, long jump, shot put), Interview/Personality Test (150 marks), and Medical Examination. Final merit is based on combined written and interview marks (600 total).

Paper 2 tests essay writing, comprehension, and precis writing. Practice writing essays on current affairs, governance, security issues, and social topics within word limits. Read editorials from The Hindu and Indian Express daily. For comprehension, practice summarizing passages. Time management is critical — allocate 1 hour for essay, 1 hour for comprehension, and 1 hour for precis.
