The UPSC CSE is India's most prestigious competitive exam conducted by the Union Public Service Commission to recruit officers for the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Indian Police Service (IPS), and other Group A and B central services. It is considered one of the toughest exams in the world.
UPSC CSE has three stages: Prelims (2 objective papers — General Studies and CSAT, qualifying), Mains (9 descriptive papers — 4 GS papers, 2 optional subject papers, Essay, and 2 language papers, merit-based), and Interview/Personality Test (275 marks). Final ranking is based on Mains + Interview marks (2025 total).
Candidates must hold a Bachelor's degree from a recognized university. Age limit is 21-32 years for general category (relaxation: 3 years for OBC, 5 years for SC/ST). General category gets 6 attempts, OBC gets 9, and SC/ST have unlimited attempts within the age limit.
Most successful candidates spend 12-18 months in dedicated preparation. However, this varies based on your academic background, optional subject choice, and study efficiency. Start with NCERTs (Class 6-12), then move to standard reference books. Consistent daily study of 8-10 hours with proper planning is more effective than last-minute cramming.
Choose based on your interest, academic background, and availability of study material. Popular high-scoring optionals include Sociology, Geography, Public Administration, History, and Political Science. If you have a technical background, consider Mathematics, Anthropology, or Medical Science. Check previous years' toppers optional choices and average scores before deciding.
Current affairs is extremely important — it is directly tested in Prelims GS Paper 1 and appears across all Mains GS papers. Follow daily news through The Hindu or Indian Express, read Yojana and Kurukshetra magazines, and maintain monthly notes. Link current events with static syllabus topics for comprehensive answers in Mains.
Essential books include: NCERTs (Class 6-12 for all subjects), Indian Polity by M. Laxmikanth, Indian Economy by Ramesh Singh, Geography by Majid Husain, Modern History by Spectrum, Ancient & Medieval History from Tamil Nadu Board textbooks, and Environment by Shankar IAS. Supplement with previous year papers and current affairs monthly magazines.
