SSC GD (General Duty) Constable exam is conducted by the Staff Selection Commission to recruit constables for Central Armed Police Forces (CRPF, BSF, CISF, ITBP, SSB), NIA, SSF, and Rifleman in Assam Rifles. It is one of the largest recruitment exams in India with lakhs of vacancies.
The computer-based exam has 80 questions (160 marks) to be completed in 60 minutes. It covers four sections: General Intelligence & Reasoning (20 questions), General Knowledge & General Awareness (20 questions), Elementary Mathematics (20 questions), and English/Hindi (20 questions). Each wrong answer deducts 0.5 marks.
Candidates must have passed Class 10 from a recognized board. The age limit is 18-23 years with relaxation for reserved categories. Physical standards vary by force — generally, male candidates need a minimum height of 170 cm and female candidates need 157 cm, with relaxation for certain categories.
SSC GD Constable posts are in Pay Level 3 (Rs. 21,700-69,100). The in-hand salary is approximately Rs. 23,000-26,000 per month including allowances. Additional benefits include free accommodation, medical facilities, canteen, and travel allowances. The salary increases significantly with promotions.
The selection involves four stages: Computer-Based Exam (CBE), Physical Efficiency Test (PET — 5 km run for males in 24 minutes, 1.6 km for females in 8.5 minutes), Physical Standard Test (PST — height and chest measurements), and Medical Examination. Final merit is based on CBE score.
A score of 100-110+ out of 160 is generally safe for general category candidates. The cutoff varies by force, gender, and category. Since the competition is high with lakhs of applicants, focus on maximizing your score in Mathematics and Reasoning which are the most scoring sections.
Focus on NCERT books (Class 6-10) for basics. Practice Mental Ability and Reasoning daily. For Mathematics, master Arithmetic topics like Percentage, Ratio, Average, and Number System. For GK, focus on current affairs (last 6 months), Indian Polity, History, and Geography. Solve at least 20 previous year papers before the exam.
