Frequently Asked Questions

SSC CHSL (Combined Higher Secondary Level) is conducted by the Staff Selection Commission to recruit candidates who have passed Class 12 for Lower Division Clerk (LDC), Junior Secretariat Assistant (JSA), Data Entry Operator (DEO), and Postal Assistant/Sorting Assistant positions in various government departments.

SSC CHSL Tier 1 is a computer-based exam with 100 questions (200 marks) in 60 minutes. It covers four sections: English Language (25 questions), General Intelligence (25 questions), Quantitative Aptitude (25 questions), and General Awareness (25 questions). Each wrong answer deducts 0.5 marks.

The age limit varies by post: 18-27 years for LDC/JSA and Postal Assistant, and 18-25 years for DEO. Age relaxation is available for reserved categories — 5 years for SC/ST, 3 years for OBC, and 10 years for PwD candidates.

SSC CHSL posts are in Pay Level 2 (Rs. 19,900-63,200) for LDC/JSA and Pay Level 4 (Rs. 25,500-81,100) for DEO. LDC/JSA roles involve clerical work, file management, and data entry. DEO roles focus on data entry with a required typing speed of 8,000 key depressions per hour.

SSC CHSL requires Class 12 qualification while SSC CGL requires graduation. CHSL posts are primarily clerical (LDC, DEO) while CGL offers higher-level posts (Inspector, Tax Assistant). CGL has a more competitive selection process with higher salary grades. Both have similar exam patterns but CGL is considered more difficult.

The Tier 1 cutoff varies by year and category. Generally, a score of 120-130+ out of 200 is needed for general category candidates. For reserved categories, the cutoff is 10-20 marks lower. Focus on accuracy over speed since negative marking can significantly impact your score.

Divide your preparation: Month 1 — cover basics of all four sections from standard books. Month 2 — practice topic-wise questions and learn shortcuts. Month 3 — solve previous year papers and take full-length mock tests daily. Focus on English and GK as they are scoring with less preparation time.
