RRB ALP (Assistant Loco Pilot) exam is conducted by the Railway Recruitment Boards to recruit Assistant Loco Pilots and Technicians for Indian Railways. ALPs are responsible for assisting the Loco Pilot in driving trains and ensuring safe operations. It is one of the most popular railway recruitment exams.
RRB ALP has two stages: First Stage CBT (75 questions, 60 minutes) covering Mathematics (20), General Intelligence & Reasoning (25), General Science (20), and General Awareness (10). Second Stage CBT has Part A (100 questions, 90 minutes) and Part B (trade-specific, 75 questions, 60 minutes). Negative marking of 1/3 applies.
Candidates must have passed Class 10 and hold an ITI/diploma in a relevant engineering trade, or a degree in Engineering. The age limit is 18-28 years with standard relaxations for reserved categories. Recognized trades include Electrician, Fitter, Mechanic, Electronics, and Wireman among others.
RRB ALP posts are in Pay Level 2 (Rs. 19,900-63,200) with an initial basic pay of Rs. 19,900. The in-hand salary is approximately Rs. 30,000-35,000 per month including allowances. Benefits include free railway passes, medical facilities, housing allowance, and promotion opportunities to Senior ALP and Loco Pilot.
The career progression is: ALP → Senior ALP → Loco Pilot (Goods) → Loco Pilot (Passenger) → Loco Pilot (Mail/Express) → Power Controller. Promotions are based on seniority and departmental exams. With experience, a Loco Pilot can earn Rs. 60,000-80,000+ per month. The role also offers job security as a permanent government position.
General Science covers Physics, Chemistry, and Life Sciences from Class 10 level. Focus on units and measurements, heat, electricity, magnetism, acids and bases, metals and non-metals, nutrition, diseases, and ecology. Study from NCERT Class 9-10 Science textbooks. This section is scoring if you have strong fundamentals.
The cutoff varies by RRB zone, category, and year. Generally, 55-65 marks out of 75 are needed for general category. Since the exam has negative marking, focus on accuracy — attempt only questions you are sure about. Practice previous year papers to understand the exact difficulty level and time requirements.
