Frequently Asked Questions
NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) is a national-level medical entrance exam conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). It is the single entrance exam for admission to MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, and other medical courses across India.
NEET has 200 questions (180 to be attempted) from Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (Botany & Zoology). Each subject has Section A (35 mandatory questions) and Section B (15 questions, attempt any 10). Each correct answer gives +4 marks and each wrong answer deducts 1 mark. The total marks are 720.
Candidates must have passed Class 12 (or equivalent) with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English as core subjects with a minimum of 50% marks (40% for SC/ST/OBC). The minimum age is 17 years at the time of admission. There is no upper age limit.
There is no limit on the number of attempts for NEET. Candidates can appear for the exam as many times as they wish, provided they meet the eligibility criteria each year.
For general category students, a score of 600+ out of 720 (above 85th percentile) is typically needed for admission to top government medical colleges. For reserved categories, the cutoff is relatively lower. The exact cutoff varies each year based on difficulty and number of applicants.
NEET frequently repeats concepts and question patterns from previous years. Solving past papers helps you identify high-weightage topics, understand the difficulty level, improve time management, and build exam-day confidence. Many toppers recommend completing at least 10 years of previous papers.
Biology (Botany + Zoology) carries the highest weightage with 360 out of 720 marks (50%). Physics and Chemistry carry 180 marks each. High-scoring chapters include Human Physiology, Genetics, Organic Chemistry, Mechanics, and Optics. Focus on NCERT textbooks as 90%+ questions are NCERT-based.
