CBSE Class 12 exams are conducted annually in February-March. Each subject paper is of 3 hours duration with varying total marks (typically 70-80 marks for theory + 20-30 marks for internal assessment/practical). The question paper includes objective, short answer, and long answer type questions based on the NCERT syllabus.
The final result is based on theory exam marks (70-80%) and internal assessment/practical marks (20-30%). Students must score a minimum of 33% in each subject (combined theory + internal) to pass. The overall result is categorized as Pass, Compartment (fail in 1-2 subjects with re-exam option), or Fail.
High-weightage chapters include: Electrostatics (8 marks), Current Electricity (7 marks), Optics (14 marks), Electromagnetic Induction & AC (8 marks), and Modern Physics (10 marks). These five units alone cover over 65% of the paper. Focus on numerical problems and derivations from these chapters for maximum scoring.
Focus on high-weightage topics: Calculus (44 marks — Application of Derivatives, Integrals, Differential Equations), Algebra (10 marks — Matrices, Determinants), and Probability (8 marks). Practice NCERT examples and exercises thoroughly, solve previous year papers (last 10 years), and attempt sample papers under timed conditions.
NCERT textbooks are the primary and most important resource for CBSE boards — 90%+ questions come directly from NCERT. For additional practice, use NCERT Exemplar problems. For subjects like Mathematics and Physics, you may supplement with R.D. Sharma or H.C. Verma for extra numericals, but always prioritize completing NCERT first.
Students need to score a minimum of 33% marks in each subject to pass. For subjects with practicals, you need 33% in theory and 33% in practical separately, and 33% in aggregate. If a student fails in 1-2 subjects, they get a compartment exam opportunity. The compartment exam is held in July-August.
CBSE Class 12 marks are crucial for college admissions, especially for DU, BHU, and state universities that use merit-based admissions. For engineering (JEE) and medical (NEET), Class 12 marks are used for eligibility (75% minimum for general category). Many private universities and abroad applications also consider Class 12 percentages as a key criterion.
